Our History
On a chilly spring day in April 1958, North Central church of Christ first opened its doors. An excerpt from an elder’s journal on dedication day is a thoughtful reminder of our beginnings.
“Today we are dedicating [our] building, a dream come true … None of us realized the amount of work, sleepless nights, worry and heartache involved in erecting a building such as this but it seemed that God was on our side, and every decision we made was as God would have it. And with the help of many good Christian people we have this beautiful building in which to worship our Lord and Savior, and with our faith in God and prayers of all of us, we hope to become one of the largest congregations in Indianapolis.”
North Central’s roots grew from a small planting by the Irvington Church of Christ. Located in the building on 40th and Capitol, the church began with 35 to 40 members in 1938. Within ten years, the congregation had almost outgrown its facilities and started talking, praying, and planning for a new building. Armed with a vision, a dedicated few selected a site to build. The land was little more than open country on an unimproved road.
It is revealingly profound to consider God’s plan and that of North Central founders in selecting this location. So lovingly and prayerfully chosen and built upon, it has become surrounded by growing Indianapolis communities, multiplying areas of intense spiritual need and opportunity.
We have seen the guidance of God’s hand throughout our church’s fifty-plus year history. We continue this prayerful legacy in growing North Central to be all that God wants us to be. We work for Him in service, faith and expectation to meet the challenges He brings before us.
