Children's Ministry Update 2019
We will tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done….
That the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and rise up and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments.
– Psalm 78:4-7
At North Central we are blessed with an outstanding children’s ministry that involves a devoted group of volunteers led by the faithful ministry of Kathy Litzkow, our children’s minister for the past 12 years. However, Kathy’s work at North Central goes far beyond her primary responsibilities as our children’s minister. She helps connect the church with our neighbors by coordinating several community service events each year, namely Clothes & Crayons and Mittens & Toys. She does this by keeping the lines of communication open with Washington township social workers, marshaling North Central resources toward local benevolent needs and other community service opportunities that arise throughout the year. She often is our conduit to serving the Nora community, helping to facilitate our mission “for the sake of the world.”
Over the past few years, Kathy has occasionally floated the idea of retiring. Anticipating this at some point in the future, we have contemplated a “succession” strategy that would ensure the continuation of our strong and vibrant children’s ministry as well as the critical role she plays in other areas. While considering this, we recently became aware of a young woman named Erica Valerio. Erica graduated from Harding University in December 2017 with a degree in Bible and Family Ministry, and, as a result of numerous internships, comes highly recommended by several known and respected ministries in Houston, Searcy, and St. Louis. We have invited her to North Central next weekend, January 10-14, to interview for Kathy’s present children’s ministry position.
What does this mean for Kathy? Well, we desire Kathy remain on staff and have specific ideas about how she could help us address two specific growth areas we’ve targeted for 2019, building on our relationships in the Nora community and fostering a closer connectedness within the North Central family. Both of these areas are well within Kathy’s interests and areas of giftedness. Of course, all of this is contingent on discerning that Erica would be a good match fit for the children’s ministry position.
We ask for your prayers as we continue to discern God’s leading in this. We also encourage you to meet and introduce yourself to Erica next weekend. Most of all, we ask that you consider anew, your own spiritual walk and involvement in God’s work at North Central in 2019.
